A Place to Belong. A Pathway to Independence.

Every person deserves safety, dignity and the opportunity to build a future. Shayanewako walks alongside children, young people, women and families experiencing crisis, providing protection, shelter, education, counselling and livelihood opportunities that help people move towards stability and independence. Our work is rooted in Ubuntu: the belief that our humanity is connected, that everyone deserves to belong, and that no person's circumstances should determine the limits of their future.

The Meaning We Carry

Shayanewako is the name of our founder's father. It carries a message of enduring human connection: whether in times of plenty or in times of need, may you have your people around you through it all.

“I am because we are.”

Belonging is not defined by a building. It is the assurance that, whatever life brings, someone will stand alongside you with dignity, compassion and care. For some, that journey begins with protection and shelter. For others, it begins with education, counselling, practical skills or support to strengthen their family. Our work begins wherever the need is greatest, but our ambition extends beyond immediate relief. We help people move from crisis to stability, and from stability towards independence.

Our Impact Is Measured in Changed Lives

We believe the true measure of our work is not simply how many people receive support, but what becomes possible because that support was there. For many women, our sanctuary has offered a place to pause, exhale, find safety and begin rebuilding, with dignity and renewed confidence to move forward. Behind the 447 journeys of young people are different histories, circumstances and futures deserving of possibility. A child continuing their education. A young person graduating from university. A woman regaining control over her future. A family finding renewed stability. A care leaver entering adulthood with skills, confidence and support. These are the changes that matter. One life at a time.

Over the years, more than 1,200 women have passed through our sanctuary; 447 young people have transitioned through our doors. Today, 12 young people are pursuing university education, and 14 have graduated, with alumni entering professions including medicine, law and social work. Behind every number is a human being. Behind every achievement is a journey of courage, opportunity and perseverance. We do not simply celebrate those who have passed through our doors. We celebrate the lives they are building beyond them.

Help Build the Next Chapter

We welcome partners who believe that lasting change requires more than responding to immediate need. It requires investing in people, strengthening institutions and creating opportunities for independence.
